Rum, Yellow Something, and Sea Lions (Maybe): Our Caleta Lobos Adventure
The coastline here is stunning - stark desert mountains dropping straight into the sea. The name Caleta Lobos (Sea Lion Cove) comes from the sea lions that used to frequent this area decades ago. While they're less common now, we occasionally hear their barks echoing across the water from nearby rocks. The afternoon light on the reddish cliffs creates an ever-changing display of colors that I never tire of watching.
We dropped anchor in about 20 feet of crystal-clear water. I could see our anchor hit the sandy bottom - always a reassuring sight. To celebrate our first day out, we mixed up our signature "rum and yellow something" cocktails. It's become a bit of a joke among our cruising friends - the ingredients may vary, but it always tastes like freedom!
The sun is setting now, casting long shadows across the water. George is firing up the grill for our barbecue chicken dinner, and I've got rice and beans simmering below. The coleslaw is already made - there's nothing better than a good meal at anchor. A few other boats are scattered around the anchorage, their anchor lights starting to twinkle as darkness falls. In the distance, I can see the lights of La Paz, but they seem like they belong to another world now.
The weather forecast looks good for the next few days - typical summer patterns with light morning winds picking up in the afternoon. We might stay here another day, maybe do some snorkeling along the rocky points tomorrow. That's the beauty of this lifestyle - we can decide in the morning.
The stars are starting to appear overhead, so bright out here away from the city lights. I can hear the gentle lapping of water against Thaalia's hull, nature's perfect lullaby. Tomorrow will bring new adventures, but for now, we're content just being here, living this dream we've worked so hard to achieve.
Time for dinner - the chicken smells amazing! As we always say to our cruising friends: if you're in the neighborhood, stop by for a "rum and yellow shit." There's always room for one more story in the cockpit of Thaalia!
Ciao for now!
