Leaving Ensenada on our way to the San Benito Islands and time to fly our brand-new Sirena spinnaker, yay!! We left Cruiseport village at daybreak and motored out of the bay to catch the wind before turning south. It was blowing about 10k… perfect for our new spinnaker! We had rigged everything that morning, so it was ready to fly, and we got the chute up without a hitch!! She's a very pretty red mermaid flying on a white sail with red trim. Bigger than our last one, and a little heavier sail cloth so we can fly her in higher winds. The wind was still blowing 10 knots at sunset, so we kept her flying. Then about 1am the wind died down to practically nothing. Couldn't keep the spinnaker full, but we kept her up as she trailed just above the water. Eventually the wind picked back up after a few hours, and by 6am we were flying. Winds were 15+ and we were doing and SOG of 8-9 knots. After about half an hour of winds over 15k, we chose to take the spinnaker down, no point in breaking the boat! Fun and fast, but a little tough on the rigging. And we are cruisers after all! We managed to head down, pop the tack, and pull her down in one fell swoop! Very cool. The rest of the day we booked right along at 6-7knots. Plenty fast enough. :). Looking forward to flying her some more!!
