Another laid back day here in Tenacatita, with one exception; there was news of a tsunami warning this morning! After some quick research we learned that an underwater volcanic eruption near Tonga had put a tsunami advisory into effect from the Mexico/California border all the way up to Alaska. Well, we’re way down in Mexico and didn’t think we had to worry, but about an hour later Ken and Sherri on Cake noticed that the tide had dropped about three feet in just half an hour! Ken got on the radio and asked if anyone had noticed the tide drop. He saw that a dinghy on Dog Beach was just on shore, and 30 minutes later the tide had gone out leaving the dinghy dry. Or so he said; maybe he was just paranoid. After all, we had recently found out about the tsunami warning! Soon many of the boats in the bay started to comment on the water levels. The tide was rising and dropping pretty fast! Normally there are only one or two high tides and low tides per day. Not one every 30 minutes! After a bit of research, I found this in the Mazatlán Post: tsunami warning Jan 15, 2022
"A strong eruption of a marine volcano on the island of Tonga has caused changes in sea level in much of the Pacific, including the Mexican coast. The Tsunami Warning Center indicated that strong currents will be present."
The entire day we had 6-foot swells coming through the bay. Water would recede, current would suck the boats out. Then water would flood, and boats would get swung around. All day we had this.. our anchors were just loving us!! It was pretty incredible to experience…not your everyday happening!
